By Kenny Tibbetts
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”
- What do you think is the difference between a “doer of the word” and a “hearer only?”
- Can you think of a time in your life when you were a doer? What about a time when you were just a hearer?
- James compares the words of Scripture to a mirror. How is Scripture like a mirror?
- In verse 25 James says that if we do the word, and not just hear it, we will be “blessed in our doing.” He also says that we will have to “persevere.” How can we be blessed even as we persevere through difficulty?
Memorize verse 22.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
Ask God for help in being a doer and not just a hearer. Thank the Holy Spirit for dwelling within you that you would be able to do what the Word says to do and not just hear it. Ask God to grant you the perseverance it takes to follow Jesus even in a world that may despise you for it.
